How Awakening Can Make Us More Available for Life with Helen Hamilton

A question sometimes arises on the spiritual path: If awakening really deepens, what happens to the life I’m living now?

Will relationships still matter? Will ordinary responsibilities feel important? Does spiritual awakening mean becoming less engaged with the world?

Helen Hamilton knows these questions firsthand. Before her own awakening deepened, she wondered whether she would still want relationships — or even be able to do something as ordinary as grocery shopping.

Part of that concern came from a familiar image of an awakened person: someone removed from everyday life, perhaps living in an ashram or sitting peacefully on a mountaintop.

Helen’s experience turned out to be very different.

“There’s actually more capacity to be present and to be present in the good and not so good experiences that come.”

Rather than becoming less engaged with life, Helen found herself more able to participate in it. She describes having more energy, procrastinating less, and no longer being held back in the same way by resistance or the continual stream of thoughts about herself.

More Available for Life

For Helen, awakening isn’t about becoming someone different or moving beyond ordinary human experience. It’s a recognition of what has always been here.

As that recognition deepened, Helen discovered:

“More capacity to love, more energy to be there, to help others, more care about everything really.”

That greater availability reaches into relationships, responsibilities, and our ability to meet whatever the day brings. Helen even describes being more able to simply be with someone who is struggling, without feeling compelled to change their experience.

Perhaps she sums it up best here:

“I just feel at home in my life now. The good bits, the not so good bits, I feel like I can show up for all of it instead of being lost in my head.”

In the video below, Helen shares more about her early concerns and why awakening has made her more available for life, rather than less.
